About Denturists

Denturist practice

Denturists are healthcare practitioners committed to the oral health of Albertans. In their practice denturists perform any of the following:

• assess, diagnose and treat persons missing some or all of their natural teeth
• design, construct, repair, alter and fit any complete or partial denture for the purpose of restoring and maintaining function and appearance
• teach, manage and conduct research in the science, techniques and practice of denturism
• provide restricted activities authorized by the regulations

In Alberta, denturists provide complete and partial denture treatments, including those on dental implants (for two or more teeth), to patients of all ages.

Practice environments

Denturists who provide clinical services usually do so from denturist clinics; however, some denturists choose to share a clinic with dentists, and some provide services to long-term care facilities, hospitals and home care sites. Denturists may perform both intraoral procedures (clinical procedures) and the associated laboratory procedures for the required treatments. Denturists usually have in-house laboratories where they complete the majority, or all, of the laboratory work related to their services.

Some denturists also work in educational institutions teaching the science, techniques and practice of denturism.
